Using Consultants
But Aren't Consultants Expensive?
It may seem that consultants are pretty expensive at first, when you compare the hourly rate of a
consultant to the hourly wage you would pay a full-time employee. But don't forget that with an
employee there are many other costs - recruitment, taxes, paid holidays, paid vacations, paid sick
time, health insurance, retirement plans, supplies, etc. Those costs are now the responsibility
of the consultant or consulting company and have to come from somewhere, along with the compensation
for the unbillable hours a consultant puts in. Evaluating this in detail shows that consulting
fees are hardly outrageous, but are in fact quite reasonable.
Benefits of Using a Consultant
- An unbiased and objective perspective of a company's situations and problems.
- The experience of having observed many other businesses.
- A level of expertise that would be costly and time-consuming to bring about in existing employees.
- Connections with other computer professionals and other resources to quickly come up with the best solutions.
